More Than Just Lettuce: The Fully Loaded Wedge Salad
Did you know there are actually four different types of salads?
Tossed salads
Composed salads
Bound salads
Farinaceous salads
Wondering what a farinaceous salad is? Hold your horses, my friend. We'll save that one for another Flavor of the Week.
So what exactly is a composed salad?
Unlike a tossed salad, where all ingredients are mixed together in a bowl, a composed salad is thoughtfully arranged on a plate or platter. The ingredients are layered, grouped, or artfully placed so each component can shine on its own. Think of it as edible artwork.
Today, we're going to explore one of my favorite composed salads: the oh-so-satisfying Fully Loaded Wedge Salad. A classic wedge salad is a perfect example of a composed salad because all the delicious toppings are carefully arranged on top of the lettuce rather than tossed together.
Now, when most people hear the word "salad," they immediately think "side dish." Not this one.
This salad is so loaded with flavor, texture, and goodness that it can easily stand on its own as a complete meal.
The Star of the Show
Start with a wedge of crisp iceberg lettuce.
Iceberg often gets a bad rap for not being as nutrient-dense as some other greens, but what it lacks in nutritional fame, it makes up for in crunch. And when it comes to a wedge salad, that cool, crisp texture is exactly what we're after.
Time to Load It Up
Next comes a generous drizzle of creamy dressing.
My personal favorites are homemade blue cheese dressing or homemade ranch dressing, but use whatever makes your taste buds happy.
Then comes the fun part. Pile on whatever you have handy:
Thinly sliced bell peppers
Cucumbers
Tomatoes
Corn
Scallions
Bacon bits
Shredded cheddar cheese
Crumbled blue cheese
Croutons
Pumpkin seeds
Sunflower seeds
Avocado
Hard-boiled eggs
There are no rules here. This is where your creativity gets to shine.
A Quick Homemade Ranch Dressing
The dressing is almost as easy as counting to five:
½ cup mayonnaise
½ cup sour cream or Greek yogurt
1 tablespoon lemon juice
½ teaspoon each garlic and onion powder
1-2 tablespoons chopped fresh herbs (parsley, dill, chives, or a combination)
Mix everything together, season with salt and pepper, and you're done. If you'd like a thinner dressing, add a splash of buttermilk to taste. Prefer a zestier version? Add a little extra lemon juice.
You do you.
Why I Love This Salad
What I love most about a fully loaded wedge salad is that every bite is different.
One forkful might be creamy and crunchy. The next might be smoky from the bacon, sweet from the corn, and tangy from the cheese. It's a flavor adventure from start to finish.
And unlike many salads that leave you looking for a snack an hour later, this one is hearty enough to keep you satisfied.
Your Turn
The next time you're wondering what to make for lunch or a light dinner, give a fully loaded wedge salad a try. Open your fridge, gather your favorite toppings, and build your own masterpiece.
If you decide to make one, I'd love to hear what you put on yours. Share your favorite wedge salad toppings in the comments below.
Let's keep Rocking the Kitchen together, my friends.
To your culinary success.
